[Engine] 1.6 HDI
#1
It's well known that this engine has historically had problems with turbo / oil / injectors etc. We all know by now about how to minimise the risk of failure but my question is have the manufacturers overcome the design faults and if so from what date?

Many changes have been made for the engine to comply with the latest emissions standards but have they also updated the basic mechanical weaknesses, remember that this engine is also used in Minis, Fords and many other applications.

The engine was completely redesigned about 2011, but previous engines should not be problematic if they have full Citroen service history. The problems you refer to generally only affect engines that are not serviced properly & competently, missed oil changes, wrong grade oil used & so on. If you are buying secondhand ensure car has full Citroen dealer workshop service history, that will at least ensure correct oil with correct oil change procedure followed. I'm not really seeing any design faults here, just a highly stressed modern diesel that must be serviced as specified to maintain reliability.

If you read the internet all you will find is problems but you have no idea of the service history of the cars involved. My experience, 7yrs & 70k miles on is apart from a failed egr valve at 3.5yrs the car has been trouble free & runs sweet as a nut, always serviced at my local Cit garage.

The engines from dv6c onwards (in 2011) are not so problematic anymore...the valves were reduced from 16 to 8, and some overall changes were made. I don´t know if the turbo oil circuit was altered or not, but there are visible changes from the previous version on the air inlets (even the air filter is different), air filter box, and the piping from the turbo to the intercooler. The motor has tyni bit more HP (112) and lots of torque (up to 270nm). But the previous afirmations remain true: good service record, apropriate oil and oil change times are a strict "must" in these motors.

You find more info about the motor here http://www.peugeot-citroen-moteurs.fr/ca...blique.pdf
