Hi - My son is wanting to buy a cheapish-to-run older Berlingo and asks which diesel engine gives the best m.p.g. with reasonable performance. Any advice/comments please?
White 2013 1.6 XTR , Green 2000 1.8 Forte,wheelchair adapted & Blue 2003 HDi Van
But 1.9s last longer and are cheaper and easier to maintain also they will stand more abuse. The downside is that they are plodders. There are also more of them in the older Berlingos

Cheapish to run older Berlingo = 1.9D ( drive like a granny  )
Performance and fuel= 2.0 TD ( drive with some zip )
Son by virtue of the question = young ? Insurance costs ?
Best advice I can give is to get a test drive before buying as they really are chalk and cheese, circumstances and wallet will dictate in the end and a desire for more oomph may end up going on the back burner alut:
I have a 1.9D must be a male granny illyme:

Well I've had my 2.0 seven years and it's never let me down, it's cost no more to maintain than any other car I've had. Also, you don't need to abuse a 2.0 to get it to go anywhere alut:

1.9DW8s have a very good track record for mega miles often 250000 plus /
2.0 are very good until there is a problem with the fuel injection (not as tolerant of poor servicing), our local garage will repair any PSA 1.9 diesel but refuse to tough 2.0s because of the high cost of replacement parts.
Any cheap Berlingo is going to have done mega miles.
Dont forget cheap to run costs must include servicing and repairs not just fuel consumption.
When we changed our Berlingo the old one was 12 years old had done over 180000 miles, had had a radiator, one set of heater plugs, a battery, and the usual brakes and other service items.

Thank You, One and all. Lots of food for thought in your comments which I've passed onto my son.
