Back axle

Well the axle change has not worked out, yet. Having to fight every bolt, and don't have the correct size socket to get the guns off. I have a 35mm one which did the driveshaft nut of a c5 but is not big enough for this. Does anyone know what size I need for the rear bearing nuts?

Second problem is at the front end of the axle it is held on with T45 bolts going into captive nuts in a box section. Using steady pressure with a breaker bar, crack, what feels like the captive nut broken off the inside of the box section. Haven't tried the other 3 yet as I had to pack up and go to work. Round 2 tomorrow possibly, Monday deffo not, Tuesday possibly.

If the captive nuts come lose,you have to cut hole in the floor,weld the nut back,for this reason I sent mine to a garage let them have the pain ,I didn't even attempt doing mine knew it would be a right headache,hope you get it sorted,

Forgot to say I think that hub nut is 40 mm

Would drilling up through the boot floor and fixing with a long bolt and big washer to spread the load be acceptable?

To fix the axle?? I wouldn't bother mate,just take to a garage let them do it,I took one look at mine see all the rust and crap and said sod that,!!! Garage job,!!

Ok axle finally fitted today. Only took a couple hours to fit, much easier than taking off. I would not do it again though. IM axles sell the axle for £250 + £50 delivery or £50 fitting. It would have cost me about £50 fuel driving down and back so it would have worked out £350 fitted and i wouldn't have knackered my back again, skinned my knuckles twice, cursed and swore about a million times and the car wouldn't have been out of commission on a mate's drive for 3 weeks!

However just done a 50 mile round trip in her, and i can't believe the difference in ride and handling. Much smoother ride and no wayward rear end. I'm glad I went the reconditioned route rather than a scrappy one, which may have been as bad as the one which was on.

thanks for the update,I agree with you,£50 for fitting is worth the trip from me if I need it someday...Ian
