Fuel cap cover

Hello

I apologise if this has been posted before but I've had a good search and have been unable to find anything.

I've just bought a Berlingo for my new business and the petrol cap cover was missing so I took it to the main dealer who sold me a cover which came in two parts.

The problem these two parts connect together but will not connect to the locking fuel cap in any concievable way.

I have attached pictures of what I mean... am I missing a part? Is my locking fuel cap broken (it doesn't look as though it is)? Am I being stupid and doing something wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

PS. I've noticed that on 90% of Mk2 Berlingo's I see driving around that the fuel cap cover is missing so I know its a very common problem but can it be fixed?

The bit that was loose on mine was the white part in your photo. What i've done is used grip fill to glue it all together. This was last july and it still hasn't gone missing.

The white part is the front as its got a hole for the lock in it. Not sure about the other part though.

        Couple of pictures of my MK2 Med blue 2.0 HDi Fuel cap attached

First one with key inserted in unlock position

Second one layed flat on keyhole in locked position

It might be worth your while spraying white bit before assembly to suit your vehicle colour.

Can you tell how your key lock fixes into the outer part of the cover (white one in my photos). My setup looks exactly the same as yours but I can't get the locking cap to fix into either of these covers.

Try this
Fit the fuel cap to the car, lock it & remove key.

The chromed keyhole bezel in the lockable cap fits into the hole on your white part so place the white part over this so the white part coresponds to the contours of your vehicle put some masking tape on the white part say inline whith the keyhole slot and mark it.
Remove white part ,remove lockable cap lock it to enable you to remove key.Fit the white part back in the position you have marked. The other black part can the be fitted from the opposite end to where you have fitted the white part.
So basically your lockable cap is sandwiched between the white and black parts.

Hi BlueBlingo,

I've managed to sus this out now. The lockable cap with keyhole simply snaps into the white (in my photos) part of the cover. This wasn't obvious but from your photo's I was able to see that the back of your lock was more sunken down into the back of the white part of the cover. There's only one way it can fit you just need to force it to snap into the back of it which isn't an easy thing to do when you're dealing with plastic parts as they are easily breakable.

Thanks for the photo's - being able to see one fit together was how I figurued it out Smile

My van is white, do you think I would get away without having to paint the new cover or is it provided in a matt finish?

Just a tip before you finally push the two parts together run a bead of clear silicone around the joint then push them together. This helps keep the cap together and acts as a shock absorber when you drop the cap. This is when they usually break.

Comes pre primed only , you guessed it . . . matt finish ! It does seem a waste of a rattle can to top coat it doesn't it ?
