HELP fuel starting diagnostic please

Hi again,:wave: now have a starting problem, so from the start. 1999 multi 1.9d 71.000 miles

Never had a starting problem, changed fuel filter, air , oil etc about 3 weeks ago, then had cambelt changed all ok up till this week, on Mon had a new clutch cable changed, Tues car started fine as always first or second turn of the key, wed, because the car has a wheelchair conversion the mid box was ordered from the wheelchair converters its stainless steel a week before.

this was fitted on Wed by local garage drove home no probs, 8pm that night went to tesco's no prob, but heard an exhaust noise so started and stopped the car about 3 or 4 times stationary to try to listen but could not hear where the noise was coming from.

Thur morning car would not fire, turned over ok all dash lights as should be, phoned a friend he said try pumping the fuel filter to see if its getting diesel, did this till pump went hard to use then still would not start so got AA OUT.

He tried and it started 1st turn but sounded like a bag of scaffold clips then went smooth, he said try it out while I am here did a mile or so all ok, next morning Fri same, so primed it then it started after a while, noisy again on starting so drove it to garage that fitted exhaust to see if they had caused any damage, they couldn't find any but said any leakage of fuel round the priming pump should not be seen as it could be sucking air.

It started at the garage took about 4 0r 5 goes to start after being stood for about 4 hours made a bit of a noise on starting then ticked over ok, so drove it home went fine, then This morning, Sat no go again, started to prime but a small amount of diesel is coming from around the base of the part you push down to prime, failed to start. any ideas??

It sounds like the priming pump is sucking in air when the car is left for a while and this is causing the non starting and rough running when it does fire.
Are we there yet????? Huh

Hi and thanks tomcat, so do I need to source a new primer unit or is there a fix?

Not sure what it looks like on the mk1 but check all the connections on it but it has probably perished if its the rubber so replacement is best.
Are we there yet????? Huh

Thanks tomcat, I will have a look Sun morn, dont want to crank it over too much in case I flatten the battery, this is the first diesel car I've had since my ford sierra that I sold in 2005 so not sure about them, just sold my ford escort 1.8si after having it for 9 years only broke down 3 times in all those years, lamda sensor, burnt wire on alternater and a flat duff battery.

Update, tried to start it again to day after priming again diesel coming from around pump bottom again, took of fuel pipe from filter houseing , fuel thereConfusedcratch:, put back on turned it over with friend priming the pump but would not fire he said white smoke coming from exhaust.Confusedcratch:

Had the same problem with mine a few years ago (mines a 1.9 DW8) . Turned out that there was a leak in the fuel system and the fuel was flowing back to the tank . I'm not sure where the leak was as i checked and refitted every joint in the fuel system and also added a none return valve . Also 2 of the glow plugs failed at the same time so i renewed all 4 .
