[Brakes] correct parts

Hi Folks,

I am going to replace the brake discs and pads on my 1.4 petrol M59 berlingo.I made an attempt at this a year ago but I abandoned the job because I was sold wrong discs even though I supplied the reg number.I ended up just replacing the pads.
Apparently there are several versions of the discs which could have been fitted!
Is there any way I can buy these parts using the VIN number?Maybe there is another way to ensure  success.
I cant believe I have to dismantle a disc and measure it before I can buy a new one(and then open the packet in the motor factor's shop to check the measurements).

I am not exactly a car guy but I am a hands on technician.

If its a local motor factors you go to , take off an old disc and take it with you if possible .

 If not possible then take one off and measure it. You'll need dia , vented or not , and the height of the disc. ( lay on flat surface and measure how  high.) The OEM make can help  ie Bosch, Lockheed or etc. That is if the brakes have not been changed before.

Sometimes the way you suggest is the only way of getting the right parts , and its not only for Citroen

I once thought that clever people in the car industry would use computers to register which parts had been used for each new VIN and then make this information available.Then other clever people would make searchable databases so that it would be easy to find what part was fitted to every vehicle.

^^^^ That is what my Factors does when the need arises, luckily not too often. This is a common procedure it would seem.
