Contrary to popular belief, it has nothing to do with gears.
One day, many years ago, in a country not too far away, Andre Citroen was reflecting on a very productive and satisfying day having just finished his latest design.
His wife had cooked his favourite meal for dinner and after eating, he sat and contemplated.
There was just one thing on his mind - he needed a device, a brand what we would these days call a logo. He knew it had to be eyecatching and unique, something that would immediately be linked to Citroen, both the company and the man.
Then, as he looked down at his empty plate, it came to him................
