Ours is indescribably filthy outside at the moment due to the amount of muck and road salt encountered on country lanes round these parts. It's impossible to keep it looking clean for more than 24 hours so it's pretty demoralising to try - though I do tend to wash it regardless of that when the roads have been salted.
Usual process is to spray the wheelarches with water first and give them time to soak while I spray the rest. Then it's a warm water hand-wash for the bodywork, clean the wheelarches, then rinse well with a spray.
If the weather isn't too cold and wet, or if it's going to get its annual polish, it then gets leathered dry. It also gets a good vac out and interior clean as often as often as I can, or if I can persuade my glamourous assistant to do it.
I've found the Autoglym products good, if a bit expensive.
