Immoboliser wont disengage.... Intermittant but worsening issue

Hi guys.

Ive searched the forum and found people with similar problems, im still struggling with it though!

My van is a 1998 1.9d berlingo, no turbo.

The problem is intermittant, ill put the key in the ignition, turn it 2 "clicks" and a light will flash with a square on with a key going into it? There will be a 2 tone continuous bleep. while the bleep and light is on, it wont start. Its obviously the immobolizer. After a while it'll just turn off after switching it on and off 1000s of times...

Earlier it did it, i came to start it, and it did it, it finally sorted itself out, then it wouldnt start. It was like the battery was dead. Luckily i was working in a garage and they just bumped it off. I got home and tested the battery (about the only useful thing i can do as im an electrician) and it seemed fine, so did the charging system. To be honest however this is secondary as i cant even attempt to start it if the immoboliser wont disengage...

Finally, once its been running, u can do what you want with the keys, turn it on and off all day long, no problems... Also, bizzarely you can take the keys out of the ignition while the car is on if you move them around gently.

I rang my local citoren garage and they said it would be £75 just to look at it... I just cried....

Any ideas would be much appriciated, my knowladge is abit limited whenit comes to cars but im a quick learner

Hi, on my old Mk1 1.9d (98) I had a problem similar but even when the light was flashing the engine would still turn over but not start.
If your's is not turning over you might have two faults.
Start with having a look at the pick up coil around the ignition barrel.
This senses the chip in your key. Mine had a broken wire on the connection. Sometimes ok, sometimes not.
Attack the light problem first. :thumbsup:

Thanks rustscrat, it normally turns over, i think it was just having a fit earlier. The immobiliser is definately the main issue im guessing there isnt, but is there an easy way to disable the immobiliser?

If you have the correct key it would be easier to sort the sensing problem out. :thumbsup:

Thanks again! If i got the ariel, would i be able to change it or would it have to be matched to my key and such?

No, if you got the unit it wouldn't need matching. You can check your's out with a multimeter - just check for continuity across the terminals.
