Insurance!
#1
Question
I bought my berlingo yesterday. It's an LPG conversion and year is 2005. My plan is to permanently remove the back seats and at some point kit it out as a camper. I'm struggling to find insurance which covers me to remove the back seats. My current insurance is a great price at 231.00 fully comp but will not cover me once seats are removed. It will also be awhile before it is a fully kitted out camper so not in a position to re register vehicle as camper yet.

Has anyone had this experience and found a good deal? Any advice welcome ?

Can you insure it as a camper???

Are rear seats quick release removable as with current models, ie they don't need to be unbolted? If so then it won't make any difference to insurance as it is not a permanent alteration. Even if rear seats did need unbolting I can't see how this would affect insurance provided you did not carry passengers in the back. Same with camper interior. Provided it is removable then it stays as a car. To re register as camper interior has to be of certain spec regarding permanent fittings. Read this. Provided everything can easily be put back to how the original was then you can insure as a car.

Did you ever get your insurance sorted? I have the same plan as you. I've found someone to do the work and am waiting to hear back from my insurers but I have a feeling they won't cover me. Any advice appreciated.

So if you removed the seats for a trip to the tip they wouldn't cover you?

Are you talking about registering as a camper or just taking the seats out?
Registering as a camper is a potential minefield ending with a vehicle that you can't register or use as you can't satisfy the regs without body mods (raised roof) which would involve a full IVA inspection.

I'd like to take out the back seats and convert the car to a camper. My insurers won't cover me as they don't insure campers. Other companies say as long as I follow DVLA requirements they will insure the car. Trouble is I'm a new driver so the majority of companies won't insure me.

I'm trying to get my head round all the rules and my understanding is that I can convert my car to a camper and if I follow DVLA guidelines, as requested by insurers, I will be insured. I've been told that I don't have to register as a camper with the DVLA just that my insurance would be called camper insurance and my vehicle would be a modified car. Is this correct?

I've had a look at the DVLA website and I think my plan would meet the requirements. Though I wasn't going to raise the roof. Would I have to?

Have a read of the link entitled "read this" that our "Opensauce" posted in post number 3 above. It tells you what you need to be able to register it as a camper. I don't think it will be possible to fulfil the requirements in a Berlingo as you have to have fixed cooker, washing facilities, toilet, bed, table etc.

Why do you want to register it as a camper?
Regards to all,
John - (2005 2.0HDi with Modutop roof, mini camper).

From the DVLA with notes added by me

Seats and a table

Are required to be an integral part of the living accommodation area, and mounted
independently of other items
.

The table must be capable of being mounted directly to the vehicle floor and /or side wall.

The table mounting arrangement must be secured as a permanent feature, (bolted, riveted,
screwed or welded), although the table may
be detachable. Where you going to put it?

Permanently secured seating must be
available for use at the table. How are you going to sit around a table to eat with std roof height

The seats must be secured directly to the vehicle floor and/or side wall Where?
.

The seats must be secured as a permanent feature, (bolted riveted, screwed or welded).
Sleeping accommodation

Must be an integral part of the living accommodation area Where?
.

Either beds or a bed converted from seats (to form a mattress base)
.

Secured as a permanent feature, with base structures bolted, riveted, screwed or welded to the
vehicle floor and / or side wall, (unless the sleeping accommodation is provided as a provision
over the driver's cab compartment
.
Cooking facilities

That are an integral part of the vehicle living accommodation and is mount
ed independently of
other items. Where bearing in mind you have now already added a fixed table, seats and a bed to conform to the above?

That are secured to the vehicle floor and / or side wall
.

Secured as a permanent feature, (bolted, riveted, screwed, or welded
.

The cooking facility must consist of a minimum of a two ring cooking facility or a microwave in
either case having a fuel/power source Also thought must be given to fireproofing and ventilation
.

If the cooking facility is fuelled by gas having a remote fuel supply, the fuel supply pipe must be
permanently secured to the vehicle structure
.

If the cooking facility is fuelled by gas having a remote fuel supply, the fuel reservoir must be
secured in
a storage cupboard or the reservoir secured to the vehicle structure
.
Storage facilities

Storage facilities must be provided by a cupboard or locker With all the above already fitted?
.

The facility must be an integral part of the vehicle living accommodation, ie mounted
independently of other items, unless incorporated below seat/sleeping accommodation or the
cooking facility
.

The storage facility must be a permanent feature, (bolted, riveted, screwed or welded)
.

The storage facility must be secured directly to the vehicle floor and / or side wall, unless a
storage provision is provided over the driver's cab compartment..

You also need to be mindful of the GVW with all the above fitted. If you modify the body in any way, eg raised roof, extended body etc: you would then need to submit it for IVA testing

This is why Berlingo campers look like this
