Not the smartest thing i've ever done....

Right, Noob/Idiot mistake alert...

I poured dot4 into my power steering tank.

Apparently this is not the done thing... so if somebody could furnish me with the knowledge on how to fully flush my steering system I would be very happy.

It happened 3 days ago and I haven't steered much since, just manouvered it around the driveway and went full lock a couple of times..... Is it likely to cause irrepperable damage?

I knew a man who used DOT4 in his gearbox.
All seemed fine at first then four days later he started to speak in a jibberish foreign launguage and would dance naked around traffic lights.
I never did find out if his gearbox was okay due to his strange incomprehensible ramblings.

Just suck it out with a syphon or syringe, refill then run for a few minutes, do that 2 or 3 times and all will be okay.

Pmsl!! Big Grin

Cool... thanks a lot for clearing that up Smile

I emptied the contents of the filler tank and got as much out of the return and pump tubes as I could but oddly there were no signs of dot4..... thats probably in the system eating everything. gonna get some fresh p.s fluid tomorrow and flush the system by running it... I'll try running the return tube into a seperate container which I'm hoping will expel everything.

unless anyone can think of a reason that won't work?

Thanks again Smile

Sounds good.
Don't let it run dry, that would be bad!

Dot 4 is mineral based just like power steering fluid so I don't think it would cause you any great problem if you just suck out what is in the reservoir and fill it back up with the correct thing. Brake fluid doesn't rot seals that it comes into contact with only paintwork.
So where does this bit go then ?

Right... I pumped all the old dirty fluid through and now its full of nice new clean stuff... jobs a good'n,

Couldn't see any trace of DOT4 In there though (would have sunk to the bottom when settled) ....perhaps I didn't put any in there after all, I shouldn't work on my car when tired.

Thanks everyone Smile
