Poor Air Intake

Hi All,

i have recently noticed the air intake setup on the 2.0 hdi and to me it seems as though there isnt a way for cold air to be sucked in as the front grille blocks it, any way i have detached the the black plastic from the grille and it as opened up the intake for air to flow in.

i think it has made a slight difference especially in 3rd gear as it seems to rev more freely and a little bit higher, another thing is why is there slits in the intake pipe which seems to me as if it would suck warm air in and would any body recommend taping them up so that it just pulls in cold air from the grille.

how do you mean ram air, i dont think i have heard that before

Well not ram air but a pipe from air box to somewhere on the front body so it's always cold air but couldnt find a good place to route it

A good while back I recommended drilling out the "honeycombes" on the grille - I did that on mine to keep the stock look but let it breath a bit easier.

I've looked at the split pipe too and couldn't work out why it was like that - thought about taping it but didn't.

Ram Air is a way of forcing more air into the intake using the movement of the vehicle.
Basically increasing the size of the (cold) air intake increases the air pressure and air density.
Didnt think my Drag Racing experience would be of use on the Forum, and never thought I would be discussing a Ram Air Berlingo!
It was popular (and effective) in the late 60's and early 70's on American muscle cars such as Pontiac Firebirds and GTOs.
Its advantages are being seen again in modern American cars after its demise in the mid 70's.

Is it because Turbos are now common place?
Why would you want to ram air into a Turbo, would that not overwhelm it? Come to that, is it possible to do this?
