Recylcling exhaust back through the DW8, Performance and Throttle limiter?.
#1
A friend told me that there's a pipe leading from the exhaust manifold to the air intake manifold... and there is!
Why? Emission?

He told me that a 2p coin fits perfectly in the join to stop the engine breathing it's own waste. Has anyone done this? It seems sensible.

He was also talking about a throttle limiter that is in place whilst the engine is run in. It's meant to be adjusted/ removed at the first service but is often overlooked. Is anyone familiar with this?

When I was looking there seems to be an adjustable screw stop that the accelerator lever hits, stopping it going further. Can/ shall I adjust this?

Additionally:
I was checking my throttle cable and it was very slack so I have adjusted it with the movable clip at the engine end making it tighter (But still not taught when the engine is ticking over obviously.) The pedal feels much better now.

I have blanked off my egr with a 10 pence coin. This went between the manifold and the pipe leading to the exhaust outlet. This way you can re-use the clip that connects the two. A two pence would be too large I think?

It stops your engine breathing all the fumes anyway and improved my cold starting and acceleration no end.

P.S. Engine may run hotter than normal if blanked, reducing engine life. Also if using a coin remember to check it often as the exhaust gases can reach 500c. So it may disintegrate causing severe damage to the engine

Sounds like a great way to kill your engine!!

If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

It is "broke" .....The whole notion of EGR is a joke to begin with. So it does need fixing. But obviously at your own risk!! Smile

Fixing by putting a 10p in that could get in to the engine and wreck it? hardly a 'fix' Tongue

It has been in there two years though...........................................?!

Thanks Adam. Your exhaust manifold isn't stainless steel and that's not melted, I wouldn't worry. Steel, copper etc. melt at over 1000degrees.
I agree that here's no way that it's good to put exhaust gas back through the engine. Is it an emissions thing? Why would it make the engine run hotter?

The inside of the pipe was black and cruddy. My poor babies been breathing that for the last 140,000miles. It's probably worse for her than smoking 40 Marlborough's a day!

The 2p coin did mean the bracket didn't fit. I made a new one.

Does anyone have any idea about this throttle arrangement then?

"Is it an emissions thing? Why would it make the engine run hotter?"

Yes, the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system is designed to reduce emissions and stop us all burning to death with global warming....it must be working because I didn't have much of a summer down here.

As it directs fresh exhaust gases straight back into the inlet manifold, this raises the temperature of the air being drawn in. Thus, the engine reaches operating temperature a little earlier and runs a little warmer. However, you would be hard pushed to notice either of these
