Traier/Towbar wiring problem
#11
Citroen and the towbar people are in the busness of selling accessories and services and will use any means to protect their income
They dont want joe public finding out he can do the job in a simpler cheaper way.

But the law is closing in.
As an example, inkjet printer manufacturers are now legally banned from this practice of misinformation.

If you take a look through the forums pages (search towbar wiring) there are quite a few instances where people have tried genuine citroen kits and run into trouble.
But there are very few posts where problems encountered in using generic bypass relays or even direct to loom connections.
Like the broken record that I am -I directly wired my MK2 -no problems, bypass relayed my first MK3 -no problems, and ditto my current MK3 -ditto.
All my other cars in the past have been directly wired including an all-electronic vauxhall.no problem

Bad luck usually follows me around like a shadow so according to your information sources it should have intervened here
It hasnt because there is nothing but solid electrical principle and practice-how inconveniant!

PAY your money Ive made my choiceWink

I fitted towbar myself, but left the (single) electrics to a local independant towbar specialist.
They charged £35 and took about 45mins to do.
I stayed and watched (I'm nosey) and all connections were properly soldered; no nasty scotchloks!
They checked the socket on a big test trailer board. All ok first time.
Would have done it myself, but due to fragile and quirky French electrics, left it to the experts.
At least if something goes wrong you can take it back.

I am only to aware of manufacturers cash grabs, and like most of us will do any accessory fit myself, and I am really pleased for you that yours has gone OK....as you say youve paid your money and made your choice, but in my case and perhaps that of other MK3 under warrantry I have to swallow hard and use thier technology, then if it goes pearshaped I can without predjudice aim it right back at them!

I get snarly when people around me are ripped off (you may have noticed???) but its funny you should mention warranty - mines still less than a year old and there is a section provided in the manual by citroen giving wiring details for third party coachbuilders!

Hi
Never got to the bottom of why the Electrics were not working tried removing and replacing Fuses to no avail
I had a look behind the Panel on the left rear quarter theirs a lot of wiring in their it all looked Ok
So eventually returned the Trailer to where I bought it. Might try and find a local Towbar Specialist see if they can find the problem
Citroen wanted me to book it in but as the Car was out of warranty I declined.
Thanks

Thats interesting after all of thier upfront "tech" discussion on subject...I do not doubt for one minute what you say but cannot find para or chapter in ny warranty
Can you copy and paste.......before I go ahead and get mine fitted with so called dedicated Citroen electrics!!Cheers..Confusedalut:

Probably a bit late but I had a tow bar fitted on my XTR last week with the dedicated wiring loom rather than a bypass relay mainly because we are taking the car to France and don't want to tempt fate with problems. They made it clear to me that the first place to look in the event of any problems was the fuse behind the rear nearside panel next to the plug that connects with the loom. Have to say that I can't see why it cost an extra £80 because as far as I can see it is a great deal easier to fit than the bypass relay type.
