Any of the above! Hard to say without looking at it!

I'd be reluctant to buy it unless I knew what the issue was and also if the engine had been severely overheated at some stage, could be expensive.

Good luck

It sounds like the heater matrix is leaking, not a job I would attempt to do Sad

Blocked or failed heater matrix! Is a time consuming and expensive job unless you do it yourself. I would not touch this car unless it was dirt cheap. Sad

so would a new heater do the job?

Unless you know what your doing then i wouldn't touch the car/van. If hes a good friend/colleague then he will know what is wrong with it and say to you.
My other question is why is he selling it?! £3000 sounds a lot for a MK1 with a leaking heater?

A new heater wouldn't do the job.
This vehicle is a serious risk and we could never recommend remedies to a problem that is not properly identified. Best advice is walk away... and say thanks but no thanks.
