choosing a towbar
#1
Hi everybody, i'm looking at buying a Towbar to fit onto my 1.9d 04 van. Are there any makes /brands better than others? I'd rather not cut too much of the bumper away. Does this mean I should go for a swan neck rather than flange? For the wiring, which van years have plug and play? I'm an electrician so the wiring doesn't scare me too much. Does anybody have some pdf instructions or similar to look at? That would help me out greatly!

Many thanks in advance,

Keith.

Hi Keith.
Got mine new off ebay from tow bar company. Reasonable, strong and easy to fit. (Very small piece to cut from bumper, not visable, couple of inches if I remember.)
Been towing caravan with it for about 4 months; no problems.
Will post link when I find it....

We have had a Towsure towbar with a bolt on ball for 11 years without any problems. There was only a very tiny part to cut out of the bumper where the plastic is marked to show where to cut. Towbar picks up on all the Citroen provided mounting holes. This is important because towbars are being included in the MOT

Agree Towsure are very good towbars (had one myself on a Volvo for many years), but they are £124.00 and don't think that includes tow ball and electrics.
The one I have took less than 2 hours to fit. Six bolts and uses existing mounting points.
Or buy a Witter for £313.20....

Hi Keith , I believe all towbars are now UK type approved and must pick up manufacturers specified points to connect bar to car. I have just bought and fitted a PCT bar from PF Jones on EBay and found them excellent to deal with. I see they are doing a bar for your van for £67 inc electric 12n socket, ball and cover . The bar was the best I have fitted in 30 odd years of fitting loads to many different vehicles ,very well finished in powder coating and fitted easily in 25 mins . If you look at their ads you can download pdf fitting instructions giving a good view of the bar etc Also readily answer calls if you have a problem and will send you instructions and pdf for you to select make best suited for you. etc and no I DONT have shares in them but think we are all too ready to criticise when things go wrong but never praise when things go well. Hope this may help!

Make sure that the spare wheel can still be removed from the carrier easily, my Berli had a WITTER tow bar fitted, the brackets bolted underneath to support it stopped the spare wheel from being removed from the carrier, had to jack one side up to give enough clearance to get it out.

May be different on yours but worth checking rather than struggle on a dark wet night!

No problems on mine with the PCT -the spare is lowered to allow fitting and went back easily when bar complete! surprised at witter - usually a well enough made bar but costly..
