Is the turbo OK - oil seals? 1.6s are the infamous one for turbo problems.

i checked the turbo was no play etc but on autodata apparently their should be a seal to stop oil run back down the turbo pipe !!
the smoke is a dense black not blue/white like oil burning

Have you seen all the amateurs talking about using stuff like oven cleaner to de-crud the turbo vanes and EGR circuit? Maybe it's worth a crack to in your situation.

You can try blanking off the EGR as blanking off plates are cheap on eBay.
AFAIK this will not cause any errors to display.

its a 1.6 hdi 85000miles mpv I had excessive smoke on start up and would stop after about a min depending on the weather.
For me it turned out to be a simple glow plugs which tested ok but when i decided to change them 3 came out fine but 1 must had never been changed as was a bugger to get out and looked nackered, changed them and never had smoke since on start up, be careful not to bugger the thread on the engine.
I did clean the MAF previous to no effect.
Im not a mechanic i just got the information and did it myself, hope this helps.
