[Engine] Clutch? Engine?? Oil all over carriageway :(
#1
Just been travelling down the A1 when without warning all the dash lit up with the word STOP and at the same time there was a thud/bang and the engine cut out.
Managed to roll into lay-by to find no oil in engine as it was pouring all over lay-by, no water and more importantly the master cylinder is now sat in the radiator.
Now the car is back at my mums (thanks Dan of the Tinds-Lee Group)
There's even less oil in there as its all over the bed of his lorry (sorry)
The van won't turn over. It just makes a grinding noise, clutch is on the floor.
Any ideas or am I replacing the van??

I'll get better pix tomorrow.

That does sound a bit terminal.

Replacement engine or replacement van comes down to the value of the van.

Sounds like the engine has thrown a Conrod through the block. The engine will be scrap if this has happened. If an engine stops at speed with those symptoms , it will be 99% finished Iam afraid.
As said, you could fit another unit, depends on the value of the van.

Wouldn't that cause it to just stop dead tho??
How much would an engine be? It's the 1.6 hdi
The van is now worthless tbh but as always things go at the wrong time.

Thats a good one - i wonder if the starter motor has done something strange like lock on and smash the lot up or the DMF has exploded? Difficult to say really without seeing in the metal.

Can you turn the engine over by the crank pulley? Anyway its a gearbox out minimum - may get away with new dmf and gearbox?

All the best anyway but i cant really help anything more than suppersition  Huh

The starter was replaced 3-4 months ago. Not sure if it will turn tbh as not tried.
I know when you turn the key it sounds like the starter isn't catching

Looking at the oil it looks black so engine oil - maybe rod out of the crankcase like Mark says and the damage you are looking at is secondary.

Have a closer look with a mirror and light at the whole of the crankcase and sump.
