At certain revs in certain gears I was hitting flat spots in the power.

Changed the fuel filter and air filter - no difference.

Read about this thing called a Mass Air Flow Sensor.

Unplugged it, car ran fine, no flat spots - orange engine light on.

Ran the car to London with it unplugged: started will a very full tank of fuel (diesel visible, just below filler cap), got back filled back up, calculated that in 200 miles of motorway at mostly 70mph + 20 miles non-motorway, the car did 46mpg, which is par for the course for this car (I've had it for seven years).

Unless there is a valid reason to do otherwise, it looks like I'm going to just run the car with the MAS unplugged.

Anyone else had similar or done likewise?

Just clean the MAF sensor. You will be ok. It is not wise to run car long term without it.
