Yesterday as I was driving all the gauges on the dashboard suddenly fell to zero. Then they were back to normal, then down to zero and so on for about a couple of miles. Then the battery warning light came on. I stopped and had a look at all the fuses and suchlike but couldn't see anything untoward.

They've been fine since but it is a bit worrying. The odometer was ok and still counting up.
That sounds like power to the cluster was momentarily interrupted or perhaps the voltage dropped too low to power it. When the cluster looses power it re calibrates all the gauges to zero when power is restored. Possibly your battery or alternator is on it's way out.
Oh great. Just what I need around Christmas. The battery is only a year old. Could be the alternator I suppose, It seemed to come and go in sympathy with me using the clutch so I suppose it could be engine speed related - which would indicate alternator woes.
my mk1 did this, to start every now and then in the winter, summer was ok, eventually packed up altogether, ive read about cleaning the connections also some have replaced the clocks for 2nd hand ones, worst case scenario the bsi unit could be faulty, are you getting any wet/dampness inside? as ive read about water leaking into bsi unit causing all sorts of faults

No dampness as far as I know, carpets are all quite dry. I assume the BSI is behind/under the steering wheel?
If your feeling adventurous you could check the earth for the clocks.
This is under the center console near the airbag Ecu. Bit of a pain to get to.
