New engine - ShaunandClair - 06-11-2015

Hi folks, unashamedly seeking the knowledge of an expert if we may?
We have a very poorly 2004 Berlingo van, the diagnosis was a new engine required!
Our dilemma is whether to walk away (the garage has offered €500 for it as a "project" for themselves) or to bite the bullet and pay for a reconditioned engine to be fitted.
Can anyone give us a very rough ballpark figure on the cost of said engine and labour to fit it?
Thanks in advance

Better off getting another Berlingo, sorry.

Have to say I'd take the 500.

It's not likely to be worth more than 1200 to 1500 and it's unlikely you will get a new engine even fitted for the difference let alone buy one.

Hi there I have to agree with the others unless you can do the work yourself to keep the costs down and you find a decent secondhand engine its going to cost you more than its worth. Take the cash and invest it in something that's already going.

If you are prepared to do the work yourself, and depending what it is, you can pick up a secondhand engine for £40 upwards. Make sure you can see and hear it run first though

Get a second opinion about the state of the engine.   The garage may know something you don't .

Which engine is it in your van, does it run and what are it's problems ? Your post is a bit vague but 500 euro would be a good chunk towards something running.

This unfortunately is the " rub " but you made the right decision.
