solved euro head lamp issues? - casaerica - 05-02-2016
Hi
I was interested to read the thread in mk3 solved issues page 3, subject "is there a lever to change head lights for euro driving"
I have a 1.6 bluehdi 120 xtr S/s. October 2015 model. I am suprised about the link in the thread from Citroen saying that " The head lights in your car have a flat beam pattern rather than the up swept beam pattern on conventional headlights"
I understand that this letter was a reply to a question on the latest berlingo.
Although a berlingo is not mentioned in the letter.
My new berlingo has the up swept beam pattern as conventional headlights and therefore has to be fitted with stickers to drive abroad. I am a mot tester now for 25 years and have confirmed the beam pattern on my headlamp test equipment.
I think Citroen are referring to a different model not the berlingo.
The head light information below is the same for cars and motor cycles showing the up swept pattern on the left the same as my berlingo and not acceptable abroad this up swept part cannot be adjusted down, only by fitting the stickers will it remove it and then leave a flat beam.

The page in the link is dated 2001 & it appears to refer to motorcycles grey imported from Europe allowing use of beam changer to pass UK mot test. I have a letter from Cit which I have posted on here in the past that states for my 2009 Berl beam changers are not required for driving in Europe. On dip the beams have an even spread across the road with small points of light that aim left. These of course point into middle of road abroad but in many miles of driving on unlit N roads in France I have never been flashed up by oncoming traffic so I can only conclude changers are not needed. I would guess because the 'spotter beams' shine only on surface of road not upwards like the old type glass headlamps of last century.

Allsorts of opinions on this. Some will say put benders on to make it 'look good' but no legal requirement for benders abroad, only that you do not dazzle oncoming traffic & clearly mine do not. Others will stick tape on to save the price of benders but tape will seriously reduce efficiency of headlamp to the extent it is dangerous on unlit road.
To me though it's mostly those making money selling bits of plastic for £7 that must cost pence to produce that seem to shout loudest about the requirement of benders to stay 'legal' abroad. I used to drive a truck on the continent in my working life & I don't think UK truck drivers even knew what beam benders were. Whenever I got pulled by the German ministry they would minutely examine tacho, paperwork & tyres but I never saw them look at my headlamps.

Shone against a wall the dipped beams on my 09 Berl. are no different to that but they do not dazzle oncoming drivers abroad & Cit state they do not need benders. It would be a different matter to try & get them through a Mot in a left hand drive country though as presumably dipped beams need to light up right hand kerb as well but it does appear that UK Berlingo headlamps do not dazzle abroad & Cit stated in letter that no benders were required.

I've looked at lhd Berlingo lights & the reflectors are different so presumably it's reflectors that dictate light pattern not bulbs? The dipped light pattern on the road is symmetrical with just 2 points of light pointing left. These 2 points shine out into middle of road abroad. If they bothered oncoming motorists then somebody would flash me up & nobody has, ever.

I think these letters are just talking about C4 Picasso's although the handbook for those mentions about the lever on the back of the light. Wait, scrub that. I couldn't even find an indicator bulb for those headlights and even the stealership couldn't identify the indicator bulb that it is fitted with. However the light from the headlights is a flat pattern. My Lingo however has got a tick that I'm sure Nike would be proud of.

Isn't another Citroen recommendation to adjust non xenons to the lowest setting when driving abroad? I've also been told my Berlingo doesn't need any stickers on the headlights.
