Crunching noise when coasting at slow speed - flanagaj - 18-06-2016 Morning, Hoping someone might be able to help me diagnose the following. I have noticed a terrible graunching / crunching noise just before the vehicle stops. It's only at very slow speeds < 4mph when I can hear it. It's coming from the left passenger side. Observations I would like to add so as to maybe help diagnosis. 1) I think the outer left CV joint gator may have gone as there is loads of grease all around the joint and on the hub. 2) No clicking or knocking noise when turning vehicle on full lock. I jacked up the offending side and there is no lateral play in the wheel if I grab and try and move it. I wanted to jack up the whole front and rotate the wheels, but some ingenious designer seems to have omitted a front jacking point! Rookie error. The crunching does sound pretty horrid and am now worried about driving it. RE: Crunching noise when coasting at slow speed - DaveH - 18-06-2016 Have you checked the brake pads ? Just a thought RE: Crunching noise when coasting at slow speed - brodfather11 - 19-06-2016 Check to see if the gaiter is still on the cv joint , I had one come off on mine . refitted and joint wasn't damaged. The crunching noise could be a stone stuck in the brake caliper , or as above brake pads worn to the metal RE: Crunching noise when coasting at slow speed - brajomobil - 20-06-2016 If you full turn left or right and in very slow speed in higher gear (e.g gear 3) and you hear it less then definitely it is CV joint. You have to replace it. Best regards, brajomobil RE: Crunching noise when coasting at slow speed - flanagaj - 23-06-2016 Just about to tackle the job today. The noise is not when I am braking, just coasting at very slow speeds. "If you full turn left or right and in very slow speed in higher gear (e.g gear 3) and you hear it less then definitely it is CV joint. You have to replace it." - I'll go and give that a try. |
