turbo gone again after 3K - jam80 - 02-06-2012 Hi, I have read lots of threads about turbo failure on the 1.6HDI engines, they seem to be a real problem. I have now had my 2nd turbo failed after only 3000 miles running. History: 2008 HDI Berlingo. Van maintained well, oil changed every 10K, fully synthetic used. March 2012 - Turbo blew due to oil starvation, took sump off, found massive build up of carbon on oil strainer. Replaced strainer, turbo, oil feed and drain pipes. (no carbon found on oil feed gauze) Cleaned out and flushed intercooler and ducting. Replaced and primed new turbo (purchased new from reputable supplier) Replaced oil and filter for correct oil. Ran up van, all going well, jsut cracked off oil feed pipe at turbo to check there is a good oil flow which there was. Used van for 1000 miles, no probs, rechecked oil flow to turbo, still good, and no oil passing or consumption. (was planning on replacing oil and filter again at 5K post change, and recheck strainer for any build up) Went out in van today, bearings nackered. Bad noises, bit of smoke, and excessive play on bearing. I rechecked the oil flow today and there is still loads of oil to and from the turbo, stuck the boroscope up the sump drain, and no blockages on the strainer. I think the turbo may of gone again due to possible bad balancing? As none of the symptoms are there again of the last failure, and the small amount of milage it has done, I cannot think of any other reason. Can anyone else think what could of caused it to go? Iv contacted the supplier, as it has a 12 month warrenty, but wont hear anything again until the country opens again on wednesday. Cheers RE: turbo gone again after 3K - Rustscrat - 03-06-2012 Hi, Are you loosing oil pressure at speed ?? This is for the DW10 engine but may be of use. alut: [attachment=590] RE: turbo gone again after 3K - jam80 - 03-06-2012 (03-06-2012, 11:52 AM)Rustscrat Wrote: Hi, Are you loosing oil pressure at speed ?? I checked the oil yesterday, disconnected the drain hose and ran it, at idle, there is the correct amount of oil from the turbo, so I know at idle it is OK, but I suppose there could be a pressure, therefore delivery issue at higher revs. (03-06-2012, 12:45 PM)jam80 Wrote:(03-06-2012, 11:52 AM)Rustscrat Wrote: Hi, Are you loosing oil pressure at speed ?? Does anyone know what pressure the low oil pressure light illuminates at? RE: turbo gone again after 3K - tc_1 - 03-06-2012 Here is an item from the C4 forum about oil changes: http://c4owners.org/plugins/faq/faq.php?0.cat.5.110 The pictures of the engine internals from a case study. Makes you wonder how you could ever clean the internals also has procedure for fitting a new turbo: http://www.turbodynamics.co.uk/index.php/download_file/view/863/526/ This one just shows how important oil changes are on these engines: http://www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=39446 Cheers Tony RE: turbo gone again after 3K - jam80 - 05-06-2012 Thanks for the photos. The original turbo died due to oil starvation, (blocked strainer which I replaced) but this one is getting loads of oil (at least the 0.3L over 60secs) recomended by citroen. Plus when changing the turbo previously, I carried out all the checks as recomended on that list thats attached. I took the turbo core out at the weekend, I can see any discolouration due to excessive heat, the turbo is free and doesnt feel rough, I think it must be a faulty part. Its going back tomorrow. RE: turbo gone again after 3K - teadrinker - 11-06-2012 I have a van with the turbo gone - with all these problems do Citroen actually do anything about it? :brickwall: It seems crazy that so many people have issues with the turbos. Sorry to hear your problems. you have done it all except one more job which could have prevented re-currence,yet still may be early enough to sort out ... I had a similar van with same problems .here how it was done.. Having replaced the turbo, sump oil pick up pipe, turbo oil supply pipe-one connects under the turbo at the front-two more jobs need to be done on these engines;dismantle the sump pan and clean inside out and clean oil channels on the engine with air pressure and using brake cleaner pumped into the channels-a simple pressure vessel with a hose will supply the brake cleaner fluid-.once done-as you`ll see the gunge coming out as if out of a tube of toothpaste ,change the oil and oil filter twice!!! within the first 300 miles and keep the third set of oil and oil filter to 5000 miles then change at every 6-7000 miles religously..then you are done! good luck keep us posted . RE: turbo gone again after 3K - Lighty - 31-12-2012 I personally remove the turbo feed pipe strainer, never had a failure since, provided all the advice in the last post are adhered to RE: turbo gone again after 3K - pb123 - 29-04-2014 can someone please supply some photos of where the oil filter mesh is that goes to the turbo, also anyone know where I can order replacement oil lines online, I am in Australia and need to buy online. RE: turbo gone again after 3K - addo - 29-04-2014 I recommend Midi Auto Lorient for your new parts, prices are good and freight reasonable. I can't afford to buy in Australia, either! Mesh is in the lower banjo bolt. |
