I've seen some odd failures, but nothing that incomprehensible. By contrast, an oily alternator with erratic output might stress light bulbs to failure with the supply fluctuation.

anyone think of making a cover for the alternator, so that the dripping oil cannot get into it?

Here is the deflector plate I made up for my new alternator to go in within the next few days. This should keep the oil out from a possible leakage from the power stearing pump.
