Fuel pump earth? - brodfather11 - 17-02-2013

Hi all,

My 1.9d mk1 has been playing up lately. When first started in the mornings it starts ok but has to run three or four hundred yards before the smokescreen clears and starts to run sweeter. After the first start its OK all day. Does not use oil.
Playing around under the bonnet earlier I saw this switch (see pic)which I think might be an earth for something on the fuel injector pump. It makes when cold and breaks when warm.
Deciding to experiment I took off the wire and tried it , Started it for first time today, ok as usual and ran sweet as a nut with no smoke .

Anyone tell me what this switch does ?

It's for operating the electromagnetic timing device which is on the right hand side of it in the picture.
Must alter the timing slightly when cold.Confusedcratch:

Thanks Rustscrat
I found a ref to a timing solenoid on the side of lucas pumps on another website so that must be it , The timing might be out slightly if it runs better when cold without it ?.

A job for next weekend maybe a cam belt change too which I think might be overdue.
Any idea how to get rid of the Not Solved prefix to subject?

Just solved the not solved

Ok I have just changed the cam belt and idlers, there was a slight wear on the tensioning one but nothing serious. The cam belt was slack, I think it has been done before but not tensioned properly. It starts a dream and runs great, nice and quiet and so far not a whisp of smoke on cold startup. With the belt being slack the fuel pump was timing was out just a touch. At present I'm getting 38.5 mpg so I think it should improve.

Just an update.

It started playing up again and now I have found the switch in the first post has corroded contacts , obviously caused by the rotted rubber sleeve, took it off and cleaned them up and now works better. Does anyone know or where to get a new switch or part no. ?

Unfortunatly this switch is not listed on the psa diagram. I would of thought it would be available though through a Lucas Cav part supplier.
This happend to my old mk1 but I just cleaned the contacts, slight smear of silicone grease then covered with a small plastic bag.
