This short thread on the VW T4 forum might be useful:

Seems to suggest a wrap might be preferable to a bra.

The red paint is notorious for lacquer peel - something to do with it absorbing more UV than other colours (or so I've read).

If there's any other body work needing doing on the vehicle, you might be able to get a body shop to respray the bonnet at the same time for a cheaper price - I got my M49 bonnet done for £100 about 3 years ago.

In the rural area i'm in there are not many/any bodyshops nearby and the rest of the body is good.

DIY wrap is the way to go, I think, just the bonnet.

Looking up sheets of wrap vinyl there is a red or black carbon fibre effect , I'll try the red but if its not too close a match I'll get the black . £12.00 approx a sheet  so if i balls it up then cheap to try again.

The only thing I can think about is if I decide to take it off then the remaining lacquer will come with it.

If the lacquer comes fully off if you remove the wrap, I'm curious if the paint would come up OK with a bit of T-cut?  Of course you could always put another wrap back on - maybe a different colour.  Anyway interested to hear how it goes - maybe post some pics when you've done it?

At the moment where the laquer has lifted its dull , but it may polish up . I'll see how it goes.
