Spring problems! - LloydyBoy - 09-03-2013

Hello all, are we well?

Although it's only March, I'm already having Spring problems Confusedillyme:

The nearside spring snapped on the old van last week. After a lot of struggling and a few choice swear words, me and a mate of mine managed to get the broken spring off.

I know it's advisable to change both springs, but being as money and time are quite tight at the minute I opted to just replace the broken spring. We got the new spring on, which was easier said than done due to, amongst other things, that blasted retaining cup that the spring sits in!

Whilst we were doing the job, the drive came out! We got the bugger pushed back in. But since the new spring has been fitted, there's a terrible knocking/metal on metal noise that happens when I go over a rough bit of road (of which there seems to be many at the minute!)

It almost sounds as though the spring is knocking on the side of the wheel arch. I've checked, and it seems like everything we untightened to get the spring on is nice and tight.

Also the van is pulling terribly to the right. I assume this is because I only replaced the nearside spring and the van now sits higher on that side! The other spring will be replaced shortly!

I just wondered if anybody had any ideas what this dreaded knocking noise is? Confusedcratch:

I want to get to the bottom of this before I go and replace the other spring.

Many thanks in advance for any replies. Confusedalut:

Are you sure the lower wishbone, rear bush, isn't cream crackered?

Is the spring seated properly?

I've had single springs replaced before now by a local mechanic (on a 406) and haven't noticed any difference in ride height between sides. Are you sure it's fitted right?

Apparently the rattling was occurring after we fitted the new spring because we didn't replace the 'spring bearing' which sits on top of the spring and this was knackered also!!!!!

Also the anti roll bar linkage was knackered. Apparently when the springs snap, it can put pressure on the anti roll bar linkage which knackers them up as well.

Not as straight forward a job as I'd hoped, but aint that just life ay
