Outer edge tyre wear - El Berlingo - 08-06-2014
Hi all,
Time has come for the old girl (car, not her indoors) to go for its ITV (Spanish M.O.T.). I had noticed that the outer edge of the drivers side front tyre ( L.H.D.) was beginning to show signs of wear. Rest of the tyre showing nominal or usual degree of wear. So, I took it to the local garage and had the alignment and tracking checked. All very scientific looking gear but all was found to be correct as were tyre pressures. So, what is causing this wear? Asked around with no real answers forthcoming. The tyres are Firestone Multihawk's which are neither expensive nor cheapo's. I'm going to have to replace the tyre but really need to identify the cause. Anyone suffered similar with these or other tyres? Could it be that this make of tyre is more prone to edge wear than others? I don't recall the original Michelin tyres going this way!

I'd be looking really hard at the wishbone bushes, if the ball joints and rack/rack ends are OK.

Thanks for the reply and suggestions. These items were all checked when the tracking was attended to. I got underneath and gave it all a good going over, with the bemused mechanic, and all seemed correct.
Hence the mystery I suppose!

Just one side of the tyre do you mean of both outer edges?

Yes, the drivers side tyre is wearing on the outer edge only. I have had to replace the tyre for its ITV test which it passed today. Again, I had the relevant bits and pieces, bushes, rack etc. checked which was all found to be perfect.
I will monitor the new tyre and see how it shapes up.
