I think the smell is the resistor pack burning out, it has to be sloted in to the unit so it's in the airflow to cool it.

I've had mine for two years, all I've had other than service is front/rear brakes, cambelt with water pump and a clutch these things I conceder as consumables.

Yes. If you put the lock mechanism in it's closed positin, but dont forget to open it before closing the tailgate.

Brilliant, one job I want to do is make some brackets so I can remove and turn the passenger seat 180 degrees and refit it for more relaxed seating, but my rear seat will not be in place.
