Valve Clearances
#1
Greetings all,

Am suffering from longer cranking times in this seasonal weather. Am convinced the valve clearances are tight on a couple of pots, due to the vehicles milage and am lead to believe these are manually adjustable/ shim based?

Has anyone undertaken this job on a 1.9d?
Any idea what the inlet/exhaust parameters should be?
How long roughly did it take?
And where did they source new shims from please?

All speculations greatly needed...

If I remember rightly from my(good old) C15 days,it's a lift the camshaft job, meaning you should change cambelt, water pump as necc.Check valve clearances, noting them down.DON'T confuse in/ex valves.Remove camshaft.Measure each shim.If the clearance is tight, subtract from shim thickness to obtain correct gap.If they are slack by a couple of thou or so leave as is.
If you have a friendly local garage, they may lend you a box of shims. If not your Citroen agent/specialist is the only answer. It's a pretty simple but time consuming job.Good luck.
I forgot to mention, get the pistons at 1/2 stroke when belt is removed to allow the valve to clear them as you turn the camshaft.
Don't forget to retime at finish.

Adam, don't forget to do a compression check before stripping, could be rings.Wet & dry test will determine.

Cheers Ron. Will go and see the man with the gizmos later in the week, just praying the wallet holds out!

Thought I'd better bump this one up to the top. The problem was 2 of the exhaust valves were closed up, hence the poor starting from cold. Has been remedied and all is well Berlingo has done 183000 miles now.....Smile

Crikey, was it that long ago?How did you find the job, easy or not? Glad it's sorted.A lesson to all you 1.9d owners,it's easier to check valve clearances than to change valves.

Was an easy job..... gave it to my local diesel spec to do as the garage is full of tat and he had shims in stock! Took him 2 hours so was easy enough if you've got the gear. Only had it done last month as winter is coming.... and funds were tight early in the year!!

Which engine is that, DW8? I was charged much more labour than that and they also screwed the job up...

Yep this was DW8...Would tell you who did this for me as you seem to have had a terrible experience! However this was an after hours job and I knew exactly what was wrong/ needed having measured the clearances myself. Took apart most parts myself and had help locking the timing belt etc.... as well as use of a shim box.... Sad to see there are some less diligent mechanics out there still!!
