Whirring noise
#1
Hi
New to this forum and looking for some help with my 04 1.9D van 131K miles.

It has developed a whirring noise that's gradually getting louder, only when moving, doesn't go away when the clutch is depressed and is constant with the speed of the van i.e gets louder as the speed increases.

There doesn't seem to be any play in the wheel bearings or change in noise when cornering left or right. I have read a previous posting that suggest it could be Diff' bearings?? Any ideas anyone.....

Could be low gear box oil.

Thanks for your reply.

I changed the gearbox oil today, filling it up until oil drips out of the 19mm bolt oil fill hole. Unfortunately the noise is still there.

Any other ideas? Confusedtudy:

The van has never really carried any weight in the back, it started life as a prescription delivery van for Lloyds chemist then we bought it and used for carrying gardening tools. So the gearbox hasn't been under stress, if that makes any difference at all.

Gearbox bearings, sounds expensive?

I believe Mike on Wheeler Dealers (I'm addicted to Discovery Channel) paid about £400 to have a gearbox refurbished.
Can't remember which car, though.

On The Bay of E, though...
you may be able to find a suitable gearbox for half that...

Thanks for the replies

I think I'll visit South West Renault Peugeot & Citroen Centre at Redruth. Not been there before as I've only just moved to Cornwall. If it is gearbox bearings then they might have a good secondhand box, which could prove cheaper than replacing the bearings.
