Speedo problem????

2004 1.9d van, driving to work this morning and noticed the speedo wasnt working ?? Tried engine off and on but still persisted, been parked up an hour just pulled off and now its working ?? Any ideas ? I had a similar problem on my ford focus, but the speedo used to just drop randomly and would effect the power of the car and also then cut out in low revs, replaced speed sensor and the problem never reappeared, could this be the same problem ?? Although the van drove the same as usual tosay just no speedo, the only oter thing to mention that recently in idle once or twice the engine has revved up on its own and then cut out, maybe unrelated but possibly worth mentioning, thanks guys
