bought a 2006 1.6i a week ago. last 2 days the fan has come on after I turned the engine off. had a y reg 1.6i berlingo for 6 years before that and did not have this happen. fan stopped after a few minutes. can still take it back to the garage for tweaking if its a problem. is it normal for this model? anyone else experienced it (recently maybe?)

I am pretty sure mine has continued running after switch off if it was already running.
I can't recall is coming on after switch off to my knowledge.

Bearing in mind the temperatures we've been having I'm not surprised. When you turn the engine off, due to the lack of coolant pump operation and air flow through the rad you will get an increase in coolant temperature. This causes the fan to switch on, common on a lot of cars! I havent specifically looked at your model of bingo so don't know if the same applies but I wouldnt be overly concerned unless it does it in cooler temperatures. Is the temp gauge normally static? if so after turning the engine off wait in the vehicle until the fan cuts in and turn the ignition to position 2 but dont start. Watch the temp gauge and see what if anything happens.

checked the coolant level this morning (doh!) and its a little low, so will be talking to the dealer. it was serviced so must have lost a fair bit of water over the week. i will also try the above.

If you're sure the level has dropped check to see whether the passenger footwell is damp i.e. the mat and underneath. The heater matrix's can weep. Not expensive for a new one (£30 ish) but a bit of a tit of a job!

the footwell is dry (as far as I can tell) I called the dealer and they asked me to top up with water and measure how much is lost if it drops over the next few days. (its 5mm below minimum and the dealer sold it as serviced so it should be near maximum!) Still in warranty so it could be a tit of a job for the dealer, not me. The fan didn't come on this morning or this evening after my work/home trip....
Fan running for a few minutes after you switch off is normal, particularly in warm weather.

the coolant level was below minimum, though, and I had to put in 600ml to bring it to the top. so far no change in coolant level (the pre sale service was not very good then!). the fan has not come on after stopping since, although the temperature has taken a dive too!!
I have 3 months to discover any problems under the warranty from the garage so am being a bit fussy at the mo.
not been on a long run so still not resolved.
