I am trying to remove the steering rack from the Berlingo, but it seems the steering column is stuck fast... I have removed the spring clasp brackety thing, and the securing bolt and nut. but it's still stuck. I have tried to get a solid rod in place and hammer the steering column upwards. It's moved about 2mm, but it's going nowhere now.

Any ideas?
Marc
Hmmm. I downloaded another manual because my Haynes is a bit unclear on his. The manual says "tilt the universal joint to uncouple it fom the steering valve" ??? Steering valve?

I think by steering valve they mean the 'knuckle' on top of the steering rack? It has a square ended rod coming out the top that slots into the bottom of the UJ fitting. The bottom end of that fitting is also square but has one open side that the clippy/locknut affair leaves open - once you get the locknut and bolt out of the way then you should be able to 'hinge' the column fitting at the UJ so that the open side of it simply clears the knuckle fitting.

That's the theory. Makes no allowances for age, infirmity, lack of working space and the amount of crud that builds up around the UJ.

Picture below should give you a better idea than my waffle above

Aaaaahhh, that makes sense now. I didn't realize that the shaft had an open face. As you say, there's not much space to maneuvre in there.

I'll have a good look around tomorrow after work if I have enough light.

Many thanks.
Thank you, everyone. I have managed to get the rack free. I hope to get it all stripped this weekend.
