Full Version: 1.9d Blocked my Exhaust Recirc

Just thought I'd let you guys know that I've blocked my exhaust recirc system with a circular piece of copper.

The car doesn't feel particularly faster and I don't know if its in my head but it seems to pull better in each gear and happy with the knowledge that the manifold isn't getting bunged full of crap!

This is how you do it (1.9d)

1, take the plastic cover off your engine
2, follow the steps in your haynes manuel to remove your manifold (basically what you need to do to get to your glow plugs -so maybe worth cleaning the wires and changing plugs at the same time.
3, clean your manifold - use disk brake cleaner or pass a rag down the tubes - mine were very dirty!
4, there is a silver metal solid pipe that feeds into the manifold front left of the engine and its about the size of a 2pence piece
5, cut a bit of copper or other thin metals to fit in this tube and block any crap getting past it and then clip it all back together.

job done!

I just done the same on a 2006 ford mondeo tdci, blocked it with an actual 2p piece!

Cheap fix...
I have also dun this but not that way, on the 1.9d mk2 53reg (like all that matters) following the egr pipe around 2 the exhaust on the back of the engine, u will c 2 torx bits undo them and slap a plate in there job dun took me about 15mins, and same pickup was much better and better mpg
Most engines don't seem to mind this mod but if you drive the engine hard I'd be careful as temperatures in the cylinders will be higher and pistons or valves could suffer.

Explain how NOT putting exhaust gas back into the cylinder head causes more heat?
The cylinder burn temperature is higher without the recirculated gases...
Not by enough to worry about, every PSA diesel I have owned has either had the EGR deleted or been old enough not to have one.
I drive mine hard as well, not my Berlingo, obviously!
I have had a few XUDT engines with fair size turbos, from various other vehicles, that push double stock figures and I would never run an EGR on one, they just fill everything with gunk.

Reckon a Berlingo should be fine. :-)

Yep, near enough my words (minus a few expletives) when I first heard this but then you realise you are effectively choking the engine with burnt gases and it starts to make sense even though its counter-intuitive.

EGR is just to reduce Nitrous Oxide output, N2O is produce at high burn temperatures, EGR reduces burn temperature so reduces N2O and also decreases the efficiency of the engine.

There are better ways to reduce bad emissions but regulations suppress (outlaw!) the innovations that engine designers find. The next thing will be compressing the exhaust gases and storing them in a bottle or something equally stupid Dodgy
