My last van, a 2000 mk1 Berlingo was referred to in its documentation (V5) as a "Panel Van". I see my new van "09 mk2" is classed as a "Car Derived Van"
When did these vans cease being classed as a panel van?
And how can it possibly be classed as a "Car Derived Van" - precisely what car was it derived from. (I believe the criteria is to be the same as far back as the "B" post) The likes of the multispace are surely van derived cars!
It's new classification is good news, as there can be little argument now over the lower speed limits that apply to (most) panel vans. But I am curious as to when and why this change took place.

Possibly 'Panel Van' was what the dealer specified or the welshy at dvla tapped in rather than any change of vehicle type.
Car derived van is a British expression that has existed for countless years. It was originally used to describe vans such as Anglia, Escort, Marina etc that used a car front end with a van body. Panel van is I think a US expression. With Escort vans etc, the car came first & then then van version was developed from that. The Berlingo is the opposite, it is a van made into a car, so correct term would in fact be 'van derived car'.

The Austin A30 & A35 was available as a factory built 'van derived car' Is anybody old enough to remember the Commer Cob? from the '60s? This was a Hillman Minx based van & the car version of the Cob was the Hillman Husky, this ran for 2 models of the Minx. Later there was a car version of the Commer Imp van also called Hillman Husky.
An a35 -the front brakes each had their own fluid cylinders but the back ones were liked by a rod actuated by one cylinder near the propshaft tunnel.
Not nice.
Handbrake on the right hand side of the drivers seat so you could clonk it with your size 11 boots and go a rolling off down the hill.
This model and had semaphore indicators on the door pillars - never worked properly
He put bench seats in the back and had my uncle cut out the windows and put glass in.
Mother wrote this one off in the mid 70's but the 58 saloon he had is still in the barn today.
