Hi all,
I need to fit new discs & pads on my Mk1, there are a lot of different makes/suppliers, & the prices rande from about £45 to £100,
Mintek being one of the cheaper sets at £50, has anyone used these ? Would you recommended or avoid, or what would you suggest,
obviously brakes are very important & not worth taking chances due to the prices,
any info greatly appreciated . Many thanks.

You can get pagid pads (part of tmd friction the same as mintex)
At eurocarparts for less than £50
When you enter the site make a note of the current promo code and apply it at checkout, currently one type of pagid pads for a MK1 drops from £34.99 to £23.44 when promo code clear55 is applied.
If you enter your reg number it should steer you toward the correct pads , I did only a generic search for a mk 1 1999 1.9D

Pagid and tmd friction are original equipment suppliers to many car manufacturers.

A pair of discs & pads (eicher brand) from Eurocarparts comes to £44.87.

That's what I would use, no need for anything better.

On my last 1.9D when I purchased the vehicle at 70k miles the brakes were EXCELLENT !! - original discs and pads.

However as time went by I fitted new APEC discs and pads from ebay at a good price but the expected brake performance never returned so after a few months I bought a set of pads from the main dealer and all was much much better / back to normal.

Clearly the APEC discs were just fine but the retardation from the pads was inferior to original.
Perhaps another make might have been better who knows, anyway the above is my experience hope it helps.

In complete contrast,

I fitted a set of dealer pads to a Citroen C4 and they squealed from the off, no amount of fettling would cure the squeal so replaced them with an after market set and the squeal was gone.

Most leading brand stuff - all that's already been mentioned - will be fine, decent discs and pads are quite cheap at the moment.

Yes generally most leading brands will be fine maybe my Apec experience was a Monday morning one ?

On my non servo braked Land Rover the modern shoe materials available are too " hard " giving inferior retardation and a propensity for glazing over due to their being designed for servo systems, my private solution for this is the buying up new old stock asbestos lined shoes and their use provides a REMARKABLE improvement in retardation over the available modern materials.

Yes I realise asbestos is frowned on but after my decades of industrial exposure I doubt a little more will prove any more fatal.

Yes geoff you will always get the odd bad batch of something mass produced or it could just be you didnt get on with them or they were taking an unusual amount of mileage to bed in?

Probably the only thing you can do with your old rover - you are right the new compounds are very hard to the point on one set of pads to a set of disks! Good job they are cheap on Berlingos LOL

Bedding in makes me laugh having come from a background of racing ( amateur ) motorcycles I always used to true up on a lathe the bike shoes before use, on my daily modern Berlingo I flat the rear of a pad then adhere abrasive to the disc and tickle the pad in a bit closer - I'm admitting my braking ocd behaviour here so be kind lol
