[Engine] Berlingo 1.9D update
#1
Been a while  ( too long tbh ) posting on here.
Some major life changes in the last few months, kinda throw me a wobbly!

Anyways, some may remember  I needed to replace the rear axle on my 04 1.9D, well that's been done.
Fast forward a couple of months and I am turning in the carpark, left wheel hits a small pothole and PAS decides to pop!
Gets a ( ridiculous IMHO ) price of £360 to supply and fit.

Contacted an old school mechanic, who quoted £150 supply and fit AND to replace the belt tensioner as well!

So, it definitely pays to shop around folks.

Now, today after using the van for about an hour in total, I go to start it, zilch, nada, kaput! Ignition lights are ok, anyways long story short, it is the alternator, it started smoking after I got a jump start. Van re-booked ( same mechanic ) for tomorrow.

Just wondering if it could have been the PAS oil, dripping into/onto the alternator, more out of curiosity. Anyone heard of this?

Its possible as the oil dripping into the alternator could remove the insulation round the alternator windings.

Thought that might possibly be the case. Cheers for that.

Heard it's really hard to kill these old buses, but gees oh, my wallet needs a break lol

Happened to my Puglingo a few years ago - a leaky PAS pipe/pump dripping onto the alternator.

Puglingo? Love the name.

Yes - our Berlingo lost an alternator due to PAS fluid leak. Mini lost one due to a leak in the throttle body (aka doseur) that dripped diesel.

Berlingo one cost £55, I have the receipt for the genuine BMW one in the Mini £234 + vat (needless to say previous owner paid the £234 - shame the garage didn't fix the leak in the throttle body)
