Hi

Sorry, I'm a bit ignorant about these things. Does HP meal High pressure?
And, there doesn't seem to be any problem with the starting, or driving of
the van. It doesn't splutter etc.

Yep, HP - High Pressure / Injector Pump,  I was typing with one hand while waiting on the phone! I was thinking it might be a sensor on the pump causing the warning light. Can you use an app like Torque   or Lexia on the 1.9D to get live readings?

I have no idea if you can use apps to get live readings. As I said - I'm rather ignorant.
I think the loud knock is wrong for a fuel pump. That's at the rear by the tank, right?
This knock sounds like near the alternator/water pump. It clearly comes and goes with the
EML. I appreciate all your thoughts though.

The hp/injector pump has a lift pump built into it, it draws the fuel from the tank , pressurises it and injects it into the engine through the injectors.
If a injector spring has broken or is weak then when the engine compresses the air it forces air  into the injector and when the two high pressures meet theres a bang.
You could slacken of the tension on the alternator belt so that the alternator is not turning , obviously if no noise then its the alternator, but if the noise is still there then its not the alternator.

The camshaft pulley is in the same area , loose perhaps?. It may not put on the light though

Thanks for that info. I will try that with the pulley. Just started it, and it has no noise,
and no EML again! It will come back again, I feel sure.

Ideally you need to get it scanned for fault codes, if it comes back with misfire on cylinder "x" then you know there's a problem with the injector on that cylinder. Different codes would indicate a different fault. Better to know, before it fails at the wrong time and leaves you stranded.

Otherwise we're just guessing.

Hi

Okay, so It is coming back with no error codes. The mechanic is a two man band and mot centre.
He thinks it is a faulty injector. The van is not misfiring, not hard to start. The light comes on, the knock
appears, and is louder and sluggish under acceleration. Switch the engine off. Start back up - light is gone,
knock is gone, and drives normal. That was this morning!

How much should I be looking to pay to have injectors checked, and maybe replaced? This is someone
I have not used before, but was recommended.

Thanks.

Were they using a generic scanner like snap-on or motec etc? You should invest in a Lexia 3 & DiagBox as it will show you injector fuel correction, fuel pressure, MAF airflow, lots of stuff, all useful and is the proper Citroen tool for the job. You also must have this to code a new injector to the ECU or there is no guarantee you will get a good result from a replacement as the ECU won't know the flow / correction values for it as it was when it was measured & calibrated in the factory (those numbers are printed in a code circled round the top of the injector body)

I don't think testing (pop and flow) of the injectors would be too expensive, there should be a few companies about who can do that. Search diesel injection specialists.

If you have a bad injector, there will definately be a code stored in the ECU under engine > fuel management as any failure triggers a misfire record and must be logged due to emissions rules but not sure how advanced yours is on the M49, may be pretty basic but even pre DPF cars that only have a CAT, will record misfire and that is what you would see if the injector stopped injecting temporarily, or clogged up, which is maybe what is happening. Knock is weak mixture and hard to hear on a diesel due to them being compression ignition anyway, so it would have to be severe to knock like you are experiencing. Like a shut down of one injector completely, or an ECU output fault that recovers on reboot.

Either way, there should be some logged evidence.

If you are in the central belt, there should be people in and around Edinburgh / Glasgow who can do injectors and even independent Citroen or PSA specialists who will have DiagBox and experience on these engines. If you were central East coast, I can recommend someone who may be able to help, he's a garage owner, Bosch trained and owns a Pug Partner HDi himself. But, he isn't a PSA specialist.

If you want to PM me your location if it is Scotland central East coast, I'll send you his details - he's a proper top bloke and honest as the day is long.

Doesn't the 1.9d still use the mechanical injector pump and mechanical injectors so there will be no coding of injectors to do.

Have a read of this...

It's a 2010 JJ so I wasn't even sure it's a 1.9D?
