Berlingl0w - B9 Berlingo Lowered on 19’s

They shorten the factory rear shocks. Or at least produce a custom shortened shock from new parts. The big issue with the B9 is the rear shocks have an eyelet at both ends, of 2 x different diameters. This is different from any vehicle in the range except for the C4 GP. The 307 uses a pin at one end and an eyelet at the other. I've contacted every shock absorber manufacturer there is and all replied that they don't make or supply anything for the B9 rear except the standard unit length.

That's how this one was done: (Novaks rears & 307 fronts)

That makes a whole heap of sense now. I like the Nozaks drop but the 12hr round trip doesn’t do it for me. I’d like to think, with a little compression, I’ll get the van to where I want it to be, I have no need for it to be slammed, it needs to be usable.

Exactly - it's still a van after all. You would notice there is little room before the bump stops hit on the standard suspension, I think I hit mine all the time on rougher surfaces. I think its too small an small amount of travel they built in but the stops can be cut down to the next "ridge" to give more travel and this would smooth the back end out.

Maybe there's an air adjustable shock out there that can be pumped up or let down, to a specific ride height. I'm sure I saw something on Wheeler Dealers but they weren't cheap. That way it could be brought down to match the 307 springs. Also the rear spring perch is not a great match to the 307 rears but it can be removed and the springs will sit on the upturned lip on the spring carrier. The plastic insert makes it fit the standard spring end.

I like the sound of compressing the springs, maybe they can compress one area to make them dual rate as well as lower. What Jonathan Creith found was if the van was jacked up, or the suspension unloaded or drooped on falling into a pothole, was the shock extended to its max length which was more than the 307 spring length and the springs rattled, potentially could fall out of place although I don't think it ever actually happened. He got tie wires from a lorry fitted to the shocks as per the picture so it couldn't extend fully on droop.

I’ve not had a great look at the bump stops, but I will now.

Quite a scary thought, a spring coming loose whilst on the move! When the van was on the lift in full drop with the lowering springs in there was plenty spring still seated, I’d like to think another 30mm won’t make a difference.

Do you know of any company’s doing spring compression, Zion?

Might be worth talking to these guys mate: (might know of someone who can rework springs properly)

This is the B9 H&R 40/20 kit:

Thanks, Zion.

I’ve mailed, all the spring manufacturers. The first quote I’ve had back is £70 plus vat per spring with a 4-6 week lead time! If that’s the going rate then Novak’s seems more attractive. I’ll see what comes back over the next few days.

Just an update on the spring situation. Having chatted to a couple of guys who had their 20/40mm lowering springs compressed an additional 40 & 20mm to make <60mm all round, I figured if compressing or even modifying the springs is the route to go down, rather than switching the standard springs back in at a garage and sending the lowering springs off to then have to switch them again, I’d inspect the originals and look to have them modified, that way there’s only one other visit to the garage again instead of 2 should I be successful in the modification. I would then sell the 40/20’s on. It may very well be that the standard ones can’t be shortened 60mm however and I’ll need to pull the lowering springs.

I was pleased to find the standard springs are immaculate with next to no broken paint. I gave them a light clean down then ran them through the dishwasher, don’t tell the Long Haired General!

I’ve taken detailed measurements of them and I’m in various communications with different spring manufacturers, some who have said it’s no issue, others want to look at the option to modify, I’ll continue the process until I find the right way forward which isn’t always necessarily the cheapest.

I’ve also contacted the lowering spring manufactured to see if they can make lower springs. A 60mm kit would corner the market, which made me think “there must be a reason it’s not done” but the persons whom have compressed their springs squashes that argument.

Here are the dimensions of the standard springs if anyone is interested:

Fronts:
Outside Diameter in MM
End/Middle/End
85/132/134
Free length: 395mm
Wire diameter 13mm

Rears:
Outside Diameter in MM
End/Middle/End
118/170/110
Free length: 370mm
Wire diameter: 14mm

Post dishwasher.

Have a look at the gap from your rear bump stop ends to the spring perch plate. You'll see why the rears are sold at 20mm drop mate.

You'd have to cut or remove the bump stops. Then you might risk breaking the shocks or bending the mounts on a hard bump especially when loaded if they aren't there.

Oh yeah! Tight, tight like a tiger. I’ll trim a little bit off.

I have found a company who are going to lower the standard springs by 60mm. To have all four stripped of paint, modified 60mm lower, painted then posted back to me was £100+vat.

I’ll have the 40/20 springs up for sale shortly, PM me directly if anyone is interested.
