Gear oil levels and change
#1
Exclamation
Hi folks

Thanks for the help in the other post about the gear oil (in the wrong place (sorry) - now below). Think I can find the plugs now!:

I would like to check my gear oil level and possibly change it too. I'm getting a small drip of oil on my drive and it appears to be coming from the near side of the engine (gearbox side). Is this common? I can't seem to tell what the oil is as it doesn't whiff like gear oil used to, but with modern oils perhaps it wouldn't. I suspect it is just engine oil but want to check the gearbox as a precaution. I understand the gear oil is not generally changed in services - is that right or is there a service interval that includes it?

Also are there any known common oil leak points?

-----------------------------------------
Still interested to learn if leaks (engine/gearbox) are common and possible suspects. Also can BE4 gear oil be identified by smell?

thanks for reading....any help most appreciated.

Hi.
What is the model of gearbox? MA, BE, AL4 or Sexodrive?

Hi PK
Thanks for responding. My gearbox is listed under the RPO code as BE4-5L manual. I'm gutted it's not a sexodrive - sounds much more interesting, if not a little distracting perhaps!

Capacity of BE gearboxes - 1,9L.
Oil: Total BV 75W80.

In fact there's no service intervals for gearboxes, but preventionally i'm replacing oil every 60000km.

Could be power steering fluid? Mine has a small leak from the same place and I have to top up the fluid from time to time. Not sure exactly where the leaks from but it ends up on the underside of the gearbox..

Thanks very much Pete
I'll keep an eye on that level. - and thanks PK7478, I think I'll follow your lead and change the oil anyway

Does anyone know what size the sqaure section wrench is to change the gearbox oil?

Or do they only come in one size?

Sorry if it's a dumbass question but I've never used one. Good old motorbikes use the same oil for everything, I can do an oil and filter change and have the kettle on in 30 minutes on my Africa Twin...

This was a really straightforward job. Drained out the bottom, and filled via the air breather valve (It's a 17mm socket).

I am just adding a fairly important update.

I changed the oil recently, using a generic 75w90 oil from the motor factors. Their book stated this was fine.

I wasn't overly satisfied with the gear change feel, it didn't feel much better.

I took the time to get some Valvoline 75w80 from Euro Car Parts and have just changed it, and there is an improvement. The new stuff seemed to pour in quicker too.
