power steering oil leaking on alternator
#1
Hi guys,

I'm new here and was just wondering if its a common problem for the power steering pump to leak oil onto the alternator. Its a very awkward design if you ask me.

I drive a berlingo van 1.9 600D Lx

Cheers

Both my 2.0HDI and my boss's 1.6HDI vans leak PAS fluid. Neither of us has got to the bottom of the problem yet, so I'll keep an eye on this Smile

Hi,

i have the same prob on my 1.6 hdi 07. As a recently new owner i only really noticed it yesterday, i have wiped the pump and alternator and shall now investigate the ammount and location of the leak.

Hope to find out more about this prob.

Thanks....Dave

If the oil gets into the alternator it'll ruin it. Removes the insulation on the internal wires

Both my bingos have leaked, both from the rubber hose where it joins the pas fluid reservoir. The clamp around the rubber hose is w££k! The rubber hose also swells a little with age and pas fluid degrades it, once it starts to swell and more oil leaks it softens more and so it goes on.

Does the Belingo need power steering? I could easily manage mine without.

Does the power steering pump sap energy from the engine whilst travelling in a straight line ? Or does it only consume energy when turning the wheel?

If the pump is a continuous drain on the engines resources could it be removed - and how much would the fuel economy be improved with this unnecessary drain on the engine eliminated?

Just to revisit this thread again, yes, PAS oil can damage the alternator. Just had to replace mine.

I wasn't aware of any leak but when I got the van the PAS reservoir was full to overflowing. It had just been 'given a service', hadn't it? :censored:

Mine leaks too.
Looks like another common fault. Thanks Citroen.
Just put 500ml of 'Slick 50 Power Steering Fluid' in mine. Supposed to lubricate, prevent AND stop leaks. Will it work? Probably not! But worth a try for a fiver.
On the plus side, a new recon/guaranteed PAS pump is £90 - £130.
A new one is £250+.
But...
Looks a pig of a job to fit (on a 1.6HDi), and may be one for the local garage? Confusedcratch:
It WILL need doing at some point, preferably before you need a pump AND an alternator! Confusedillyme:

Aye, just had the steering pump AND the alternator done.
Steering pump £105, alt. £109 both plus fitting. Plus HMRC's twisting of the knife.Sad
