Rather than put this on thread re Winter Tyres, I thought it mightbe better here as it covers ALL tyres, whether Trade or PRIVATE sale.

This is part of Manchester Trading Standards Leaflet

By law, it is illegal to supply a part-worn tyre that is capable of being fitted to a motor vehicle or trailer unless certain conditions are met regarding specific markings and the general condition of the tyre.

Most importantly, all types of part-worn tyre must be marked 'PART WORN', any repairs to tyres must comply with British Standards, and it is illegal to have unsafe tyres in possession for sale.

7.—(1) Subject to Part III of these Regulations, no person shall supply— etc etc etc etc etc etc

I've fitted, or more correctly had fitted, part-worn tyres, but only rarely and then only when I have owned the tyre from new. For example, I had a pair of new tyres fitted to our MK5 Golf a couple of years ago, and had a bad puncture in the NSF which could not be repaired when the tyres were maybe 1/4-1/3 worn. I don't like the idea of unequal amounts of tread so opted for a new pair, rather than just one tyre, keeping the part-worn one as a spare which I was able to use.
There's no way I'd buy a part-worn tyre with unknown history from anyone else though.
In recent years the tyre depot I use refuses to fit part-worn tyres for customers.

I've no problem with part-worns. Got a pair on the van infact..thing is, when you buy a second hand car do you replace all the tyres? Thought not.

ive run my discovery on part worn tyres for years,,,loads of people take of perfectly usable tyres to fit "better" ones. and nearly every vehicle that gets scrapped has atleast one usable tyre on it.

As a notorious skipdipper I am frequently dismayed at what is thrown out-the last time we had a new washing machine the delivery lorry was half full of gleaming shiny machines -they were old ones collected!

No, PeteA, I don't automatically replace all the tyres when I buy a s/h car - we've all got to draw the line somewhere, and motoring on a tight budget is often a case of trying to balance cost against safety. After all, you could be unlucky and have a fatal blow-out just after having a set of new tyres fitted - but you would have to be very unlucky.
If we apply the rule that 3 in 4 part-worns are safe, and many of them probably are, that still leaves one dodgy one. Worse odds than Russian roulette with a service revolver. :eek:
As I said, I've no probs with part-worns that I know the history of, but otherwise, no ta.

I would never have part worn tyres on a car/van Period!!! You have no idea where they have come from or what they may or may not have hit.

So you would never hire a car, travel in anyone else's, let any one else drive yours unaccompanied ,go on a bus, take a cab ,fly on a plane, buy a used car without replacing the tyres ?
