sloppy gearbox
#1
I have a 2006 berlingo 1.9d van with a sloppy gearbox, very sloppy when in 5th, all gears work but are hard to find and when going from 2nd to 3rd sometimes will find 5th if I am not very carful. all the linkage up to gearbox is fine showing that all sloppy movement enters the box. does anyone have an idea as to what is wrong. van has only done 40k

1 more question, is block changing the gears OK with this gearbox

What's block changing?
Are you sure all the linkages are OK? I've had the banjo style links fail. They can go a bit sloppy. Cheap to buy and easy to replace.

Block changing is missing out a gear e.g. changing up from 2nd to 4th or changing down from 5th to 3rd.
The benefits of block gear changing, especially changing up, is better fuel economy. Missing a gear when changing up if necessary will allow the engine to work easier and will use less fuel. Frequent use of block gear changing down will reduce wear on the clutch and gearbox, both being rather expensive to repair or replace. Block gear changing also allows for greater time for both hands to remain on the steering wheel and greater concentration on the road ahead.
