Possible Berlingo Gearbox issue?
#1
Bug
Hey there all I have a 2005 Berlingo MKII M59 1.4L
I have an interesting issue that just recently happened
I went to do a transmission/gearbox oil change and when I drained it I found that there was only about 900ml of oil that drained out which was a worry already as im pretty sure it needs 2 litres
but the strange thing was after putting in the new oil which was a 75w85 penrite fully synthetic oil then took the car for a drive I found that first gear seemed to make what could only be described as a whirring rattling noise which sounded similar to the sound a cv makes when it needs to be replaced but it only does it in first gear but not in any other gear or reverse. the sound speeds up as you accelerate so it does sound as if its a circular movement sound. (the only way to describe it in letters would be like so.....grhaaauuwwwwwwwwrrrrr and dededededededede those two sounds combined lol) and as you speed up the pitch gets gradually higher and slightly quieter. also if you accelerate harder its louder but not as loud if lightly accelerated

sometimes it can be heard just a touch in 2nd but only faint
also if you are driving along and use the motor to slow down the car while coasting it makes the same rattling sound as like in first but not as loud

the thing that is strange is that my car never made any of these noises before i did the transmission oil change???

any ideas?

I had the input bearing on my m59 slowly fall apart..... Made horrible noises in odd gears till it let the oil out of gearbox...then it wrecked the clutch .
I have read that it's a common problem. Had to pull box out (and apart to confirm), but once out you could wobble input shaft a lot. Citroen Aust had a better bearing to replace it with..

Good luck !

Ok Soooo I Basically Did a complete replacement of the gearbox and the clutch and the lower engine mount and the main engine seal and drive shaft seal and then the strangest thing happens as soon as the car is started after the change over
I get the temp gauge going way up high and the STOP warning light going nutso on me!
but the car doesn't seem to be overheating even though its going off the charts on the Instrument gauge??
what it does is as follows ... it gets quickly to 90 degrees after like 2 min driving then it stays for a moment there
then it slowly gets higher and the fan kicks in likes it about to take off! then the gauge goes completely maxed out stays there for like 10 seconds then quickly drops to around 95 and then goes down to under 90 then repeats the process all over again?.....i did a engine OBDII check thingo and the errors I got were

in the BSI:
0C01 Permanent fault (downgraded arming of the comfort network)

not sure what to make of this? mind you i did fix a fault when i first got my berlingo which was a stuck fan speed maybe its related to this?

in the instrument cluster panel:
0720 intermittent fault (vehicles speed incorrect value received)
0740 intermittent fault (coolant temp incorrect value received)

ok so does that mean i need to replace the green coloured temp sensor screw in pluggy thing that is on top of the thermostat?
and the speed sensor that goes into the gearbox

any replies welcome

ohh I did a reset of the codes and no new codes appeared all disappeared but for some odd reason the engine check light didn't un-illuminate?

I'm not an expert but I would check wiring to start with to investigate any intermittent faults. Sensors might be OK, otherwise it would spit out a permanent fault, I guess...

Before changing the temp sensor please try BSI reset procedure...

ohh its been a while but i thought i'd better tel you what was resolved in case anyone was like WTF?
the 0C01 Permanent fault (downgraded arming of the comfort network) error code
was actually the mechanics fault as he had somehow managed to pinch the heater hose in the between the gearbox and motor when he put the gearbox in and it was stopping the water flow so the ecu reported it as the "comfort system" i.e. the heater section being downgraded permanently i.e. hose pinched!  its fixed now lol
mind you i found this after replacing the temp sensor extra money spent but i guess it wasn't too expensive lol

also he put the wrong type oil in the gearbox which I recently replaced as it was 75-W85 when it was supposed to be 75-W80

so now I'm happy that its all back to normal lol

I doubt if the oil he used was a problem, it would just start out a little thicker but perform the same under pressure. Nipping the heater hose in the bell housing would definitely be a problem. Good that you are sorted.
So where does this bit go then ?

Actually interestingly enough when I changed the gearbox oil back to 75-W80 the gear changes feel better and less clunky then compared to when he originally put the other oil in Smile
