[Engine] Nasty sooty smell
#1
Hi, my 1.9d has a very nasty sooty smell, and also high oil consumption. What could be the issue?

Engine oil leak from the top rocker cover ?, the leaking oil runs down onto the hot exhaust manifold.

Positive. Had even to change the cover and applied tons of silicon. Negligible leakage but oil consumption still there.

Its mostly at the exhaust but it lingers the air after I've entered the driveway without revving hard. The oil turns sooty quite rapidly. i've had the van since 09 and it now has 241,000 Kms on the odo. Has been done one complete rebuild and a couple of gasket changes.

Is the engine running OK and is there a lot of fumes coming out of the engine oil filler cap when running.  ?

If a lot of fumes then it could be your piston rings  Sad

When rebuilt where the valve oil stem seals changed ( another possible cause of oil getting into cylinders.)

Have you had the timing belt done , if wrongly fitted it will run poorly and smokey.

Is the EGR operating properly ?.  Or is it disabled and blocked off.?  Maybe burning/sucking in  more than fumes.

Engine runs well, just covered 500kms last Friday at the expense of 1 litre of oil. Will check on fumes, but when I open to top up oil I usually see wisps of smoke.

I have been suspecting rings coz of previous overheating incidences before i put in a new radiator.

valve seals were changed during last head work (when I put in brand new head bolts).

Timing should be Ok. It starts and runs fine.

EGR is not not disabled neither blocked off but is not operating well due to engine harness being in a terrible state. For example the EGR switch connector cannot hold due to the catch being broken off, solenoid harness being chapped and insulation worn off (taped), and the Air Flow sensor connector also not mating properly.

I'd like to add, due to the aforementioned issue the EML lights up and the car becomes jerky and weak for short periods -blue smoke manifests, then clears up and continues as normal.

the 1.9 is prone to jerkyness and lacking more so in power when the MAF is not working right.

when i had a buggered MAF the engine wouldnt rev past 4000 - when joining motorway or such like it was like hitting a limiter and jerked badly at around 1800-2000. and EML was on .

What are the stored codes ?

Right now, I'm quite far from Peugeot planet, but in the course of this week, I should get a mech with one to have a look at it, but unless I get another harness, it'll be one diagnosis after another. I can try cleaning the MAF & EGR with carb choke cleaner and then try to squeeze in the plug but that's as much I can try from where I am.

just curious. While you had the jerkiness issue, did your engine also manifest oil consumption? I'm trying to eliminate the cause of the oil consumption - that if it isnt related to the jerkiness.
