CAMBELT CHANGE TIP - Cuthbert - 21-03-2018

I was given a tip but have not tried on Berlingo. When changing a cambelt instead of pulling or cutting the old one off slice it into two around the entire length. Cut the front half off and all the timing will still be held in place by the rear half. Then slide the new one over the drive wheels etc and when satisfied you can cut the rest of the old one off then drive the new one completely home. I have done it on other cars ok and saved loads of lining up timing marks etc.

That's a useful tip, which I think has been mentioned on here before.

Just check the tension on the new belt to make sure all is well, as it will possibly be different than the old one.

I saw this on I think Car SOS a few months ago looks a brilliant idea

A lot of pulleys have a flange on the front of them so it doesn't work on all engines.

Always an obvious temptation with this one but my advice with a highly tuned interference engine is to exercise due diligence and take the longer road.

Was the timing set up correctly with previous belt.
The shortcut won't allow for correct belt tensioning.
When tensioning the pulleys need to be slack to allow them to move for correct tension ALL over the belt.

Don't be tempted and do it properly it isn't much more work or time at the end of the day.

I can think of nothing worse than taking this short cut!

I have replaced the timing belt too(1.4 petrol) and I went the long road, what actually was not long at all. I have got a aynes manual and I followed that.
Locked the valve cog and the clutch just behind the oil filter and everything stayed as it should be. Started car, no metal noise and since all good for 6k miles.
What I learned on my car and my motorbike is never cut corners and dont rush.
