IIRC, it uses a light sensor behind the mirror so while it's possible, I doubt  that it's easy.

I had the auto rain & light options on an M59, to be honest it did not work that well. You can find some posts on here about it being dangerous.

I don't have my M59 handbook any more so can't tell you the correct page to look at. But from memory, if you press & hold that button for about 10 seconds you should see a message on the main display in the centre of the dash about auto lights being activated / deactivated. It may be that the ignition needs to be on or maybe off for it to work.

It may also be that at some point the stalks were replaced.

I think that @jj9 has an M59 with this function
