Drill those holes.

RE: tow hitch points - corkgsxr - 16-02-2011

so is there no standard mounting points from factory?

where in the 2" rails that run down either side of the spare wheel?

Hi and welcome to the forum corkgsxr. If you are going to stick around (and please do) then when you've got a couple of minutes, put a post in the "intro" or "owners" areas to say hello and introduce yourself (and your Berlingo). Cheers

Welcome corkgsxr to Berlingo forum.

May I draw your attention to this information copied from the Departmant For Transport website and I quote,

"4. What are the requirements to fit a type approved tow bar?

If you wish to tow anything with a car which was first used on or after the 1st August 1998 the car must be fitted with a type approved tow bar.

5. My car was first registered on 1st September 1998; do I need a Type approved tow bar?

Yes, all cars first registered on or after 1st August 1998 must be fitted with a type approved tow bar if they are to be used for towing.

6. How can I tell if a tow bar is type approved?

Each type approved tow bar will have a label, plate, or stamping detailing its type approval number for example E11xxxxxxx, and the details of the vehicle for which it is an approved fitment.

7. May I fit a type approved tow bar myself?

Yes provided you use the car manufacturer's approved mounting points, and follow the tow bar manufacturer's instructions."

So clearly, the home manufacture of towbars is no longer permitted, I have recently had a Witter towbar fitted to my vehicle, this is type-approved and all holes matched up with ready drilled ones in the chassis.

I am not in any way doubting your ability to fabricate and weld materials but just pointing out that laws have changed and in the event of an accident then not only do you risk the attention of the police but also you would undoubtedly invalidate your insurance.

To make you further aware, towbars now form part of the current annual M.O.T. test for vehicles in the United Kingdom

RE: tow hitch points - corkgsxr - 16-02-2011

fair point but i just dont have the dosh to be buying one

made the last one for my transit never had a bother.

all im wondering is where the manufacturer holes for mounting the bar to are?

im going to fab one up i have all the stuff i need just cant find the holes. Dodgy

im in ireland so its a diff test, and i know no tester over here will fail my bars.

even after the new legislation that was to fail all aftermarket exhausts came in any i done still passed as the were welded properly and no stupid loud one at funny angles

RE: tow hitch points - andy-womble - 16-02-2011

I have done the same myself and in the past have made, modified and welded towbars but I can no longer get my materials at the right price (Does help to have worked in engineering, nudge nudge) and I am debarred from doing any type of electric welding due to having an implanted cardiac defibrillator which is sensitive to powerful electric currents.

Good luck

RE: tow hitch points - corkgsxr - 16-02-2011

its the defib of be the most worryed about with welding, best be carefull with that

i have everything needed here the only thing i need is the socket but ill get that when alls made, im a plumber but iv been welding since i was 15

and im fairly good a wiring too
